It’s that time of year again. Time for the cooler evenings and shorter days leading to the most amazing leaf colors you’ve ever seen. The mountains of Western North Carolina are loaded with trees that have changing leaves. It’s incredible to see mountain after mountain with every imaginable color of leaves, all happening at the same time! It is literally a sea of color. Most people visiting our area to see the changing of the leaves we call leaf peepers. We get asked the same question every year. When is the peak of the leaf changing season?
The answer to that question is dependent on your altitude. At any time in the fall season, you can find an area that is at it’s peak color. The best way to find what you are looking for is to take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway . This roadway travels along the peaks of the Appalachian Mountains and has numerous overlooks from which you can view the color change. There are various heights that you can drive to in order to find the perfect leaf colors. The earlier in the season, the higher up you need to go in order to find those spectacular colors. As the season progresses, you’ll find more color lower down and in the valleys (which is where most of the mountain towns can be found).
